In today’s world of rising divorce, marriage therapists are becoming more demanded. Because of this, becoming a marriage therapist is a career that can help you to meet your long term goals, provide you with job security and give you an opportunity to give back to the community.

Being a marriage therapist is a very important job that holds the responsibility of other people’s lives. The job can be very demanding and require a lot of your time, but on the other hand you have the option of working for yourself and making your own hours and therapist practice.

If becoming a marriage therapist is something that interests you, determining whether or not the career is a good fit for you is the first step!

Is a Career as a Marriage Therapist Right for You?

If you can answer yes to the following questions, becoming a marriage therapist may be right for you:

1. Do you pride yourself in your work ethic?

2. Are you a responsible person?

3. Are you a respectful person?

4. Do you find that you’re able to keep your emotions in check so as not to allow them to make you a biased counselor?

5.) Are you prepared to behave in a professional fashion at all times while working, and wearing suits to work everyday?

6.) Do you and other people around you fell that you’re a good listener?

7.) Do you have patience to deal with things when they aren’t going fast enough or the way you want?

Requirements for This Career

Getting involved with the community is a good way to prepare yourself for your new career as a marriage therapist. Working on your listening and patience skills along with maintaining a self motivated attitude is also another good way to prepare.

When it comes to schooling requirements, the first thing you will want to do is attend a 4 year college and major in psychology. Once you’ve completed your degree in psychology, you will need to earn your B.A. in marriage and family counseling, which will require an additional 1-2 years of schooling.

Your degree in psychology and marriage and family counseling are required, but consider taking an additional class or 2 in early childhood development or other human interest courses. Although these won’t be required, they will certainly help you to exceed what is expected of you as a marriage therapist.

Finally make sure to check with the area you’ll be counseling in, as some regulations may vary slightly from place to place.

There may be times in your marriage, when the communication between the two of you is basically non-existent. You have no sex life, and even when you talk you are only arguing, the husband is heading straight to the fridge to get a beer, and the wife is unwilling to talk with him. These are the times when it is advisable to try marriage therapy, a therapist will try to help you overcome your problems and establish communication and intimacy again. Or he or she may also make you realize that it is perhaps better to split up than remain in a marriage that will inevitably remain bad.

What Is Marriage Therapy?

Marriage therapy or counseling helps to resolve any conflicts and improve the relationship between couples. A counselor will try to give tools and strategies for couples to solve their problems and understand each other better. The couples attend sessions by a licensed marriage therapist, who will be able to give professional advice and explore any hidden conflicts. Some couples may need only a few sessions to solve a minor problem, or they may need long-term marriage counseling, they usually attend a session once a week.

Couples should try to find a good marriage therapist, preferably with lots of experience regarding their specific problem and has the suitable background to help them. Mostly, couples will attend marriage therapy sessions together, but sometimes they may see the therapist separately, especially if one of them has a more serious issue. It may also be the case that only one half of the couple is willing to see the therapist, in which case he or she may try to help the husband or wife to deal with his or her partner. But in these cases the success is not very likely, as it shows the essential unwillingness from the part of the other person.

What Are The Advantages Of Marriage Therapy?

Most of the times, partners bring their own specific ideas and background to a relationship, these differences could have seemed complementary in the times of dating, however in times of problems, these differences can lead to conflicts. Marriage therapy can also help if infidelity, substance abuse, depression, financial matters or even domestic violence is involved. If some issues are not dealt with and remain repressed in a relationship, they can lead to more serious problems, to a lack of communication and the eventual breakdown of the marriage. However, if couples try to find a therapist and resolve their problems, he or she may be able to give valuable advice and help. The therapist may pinpoint differences and the source of the problems and then give the suitable skills to learn to deal with problems differently and thus solidify or improve the relationship. In most of the cases marriage therapy does work, is successful and has a beneficial effect on a disintegrating relationship.

Relationships are hard work, and sometimes people who are in long term relationships find it hard to spot all of the signs that mean the relationship may need help. There are a few aspects that are important to a healthy relationship which include communication, friendship, loyalty and of course romance.

Believe it or not, it doesn’t take much to create problems in a relationship. If just one aspect of the relationship is experiencing trouble, there is a definite possibility that it can trigger other problems, and the relationship may come to end. The good news is that with the proper help, relationships can be saved.

Signs That a Relationship May Be in Need of Help

The following list includes but is not limited to the signs that may mean a long term relationship is in trouble:

1. Lack of communication that was previously there. For example the disappearance of evening talks over coffee that were once routine, or phone calls to each other start to diminish.

2. Change in daily routines. For example a spouse starts going to work earlier than they used to, or a spouse starts missing dinner at home.

3. Lack of romance that used to be there. For example sex has slowed down considerably or even stopped, or weekly romantic dates to dinner, the movies or a museum are no longer happening.

4. Arguments happening more frequently than ever before. For example arguing on a daily basis, or arguing for no good reason such as over what to have for dinner.

5. Spending less and less time together. For example no longer attending functions or parties together, or no longer arranging each other’s schedules to coincide with one another.

What Kind of Relationship Help is Available?

Don’t wait until it’s too late to get help with your relationship, make sure to do it when you first start recognizing signs of possible trouble. There are plenty of ways to get help and using more than one may be necessary.

Seeing a counselor is a great way to get relationship help and counselors that are specialists in the subject are available, such as marriage counselors and family therapy counselors.

Using a priest or a pastor to counsel you may not be the right choice for everyone, but it can work wonders for some. It is suggested that this option is only taken by those that truly believe in the religion of the priest or pastor as their religion is what their counsel is usually based on.

Trying to help the relationship privately isn’t a bad idea, and wouldn’t hurt to try before resorting to some type of counseling. This can be accomplished by reading relationship books and applying techniques taught through them, and using relationship help websites that offer important information to help you get things back on the right track. Unfortunately the answer isn’t always easy to find, so research and commitment is important to the process.

In these days of quick courtships and even faster divorce, we need to have a broad perspective regarding marriage and relationships. Many people view marriages lightly and divorce at the slightest altercation. On the other hand, many also seek to hold on their marriages. There are many reasons to save your marriage. These reasons are things that you have to ponder on before even mentioning divorce or thinking about moving out.

The Degree Of Love

Love has never claimed to be perfect. In fact, it is people who have idolized love and put it on a pedestal. One reason to save your marriage is the fact that you both felt love for each other at some point in your lives. Separating just because of a one time disagreement or argument is a sign that you got married for all the wrong reasons. The drive to save your marriage needs to be based on the love that you both feel for each other.

Love is something that you work at, not something that is sitting idly in our hearts. The decision to save the marriage comes from both people involved in the marriage and not the other relatives in the background.

Responsibility Of Marriage

When you took your marriage vows and said them in front of your God and all the other people present, you have an obligation to save your marriage at the first sign of a problem. Working at making a marriage work is part of how to save a marriage even before it breaks down. The responsibility you took when you got married should be upheld even at the worst times.

Giving up at times of hardships is not a way to save your marriage and make it work. Both the husband and the wife have an obligation to make the marriage function and to help each other every step of the way.

The Children

Although, children can eventually understand if their parents would like to separate, the fact of the matter is that there is a sense of betrayal on their part when their parents do this. You need to fully weigh the consequences of not making an effort to save your marriage for the sake of children. Older children are more accepting of the fact of divorce and separation while younger ones tend to blame themselves for these events. Many people think that the effort to save your marriage for the sake of children is wrong. The right reasons can justify not making a move to save your marriage for the sake of the children.

These are just some of the reasons to save your marriage. Of course, there are also some major reasons for separating which need to be taken into consideration such as spousal abuse and child abuse. The act to save your marriage needs to come from you since you are the ones involved in this and nobody else.

Marriage is a commitment to a person that you love. Marriage is not meant to be a battlefield, although sometimes it may seem like World War III. It’s easy to want to end a relationship with the person if things are just not working out, but separation and divorce are not always the answer. Before taking any drastic step I tried to find ways to save my marriage.

Problems And Solutions

Because I wanted to save my marriage I first had to recognize that we were having problems. If either one of us said that there was no problem, then the fact that we were denying the problem was a problem all its own. What we will need to do is agree that we are having problems and that we needed to seek help.

If there are cycles of hurt and denial going on in our relationship, then there may be a moment when we realize that we will need a third party in order to resolved some of the conflict and tension that have been building up in order to save my marriage. Some rules to follow when trying to save my marriage included not bringing up old conflicts or hurts, and I also didn’t expect my spouse to be able to read my mind. I tried to avoid using harsh, negative words when talking about my feelings or the situation. In this way I hoped to begin to open positive lines of communication in order to better solve our problems.

Once we had solved the problem of communication, we had to get down to what the real problems of the marriage were and why they were affecting the way we communicate. We learned to always make sure to address important issues instead of ignoring them or walking away from the discussion. This kept the dialogue open.

Sometimes, even when people repair the communication issues, there are still too many other issues there that people cannot deal with alone. Seeking out a marriage counselor or other form of therapy can help the situation by bringing in a fresh perspective. Finding a professional to help save my marriage was the best thing I ever did. A counselor was able to see past the faces and the problems and get down to the real reason for the arguing about something as simple as whose turn it is to clean or how the bills are getting paid. A third party was a better judge of how we handled and repaired our relationship. This was the key to saving my marriage.

Relationships are never black and white, there is always plenty of grey scattered throughout them. Because of this, relationships take a lot of work to keep them strong, and even then sometimes we can find ourselves dealing with relationship problems.

It can be difficult to fix problems that occur within a relationship, especially if we’re not entirely sure how to go about it. The first thing to be done to fix relationship problems is to make sure we’re doing everything we’ve committed to do for our partner in our relationship.

These things include being open to communication, being committed to compromise, and being a friend among other things. If both people are not displaying these basic attributes within a relation, problems will no doubt occur. If this happens, you can take the following steps to help get your relationship back on track.

Hold a Meeting

The meeting doesn’t have to be formal, but it needs to be committed to in order to get on the right track for fixing your relationship problems. This meeting needs to be scheduled, not tried to be fit in before work or it simply won’t work. Be prepared to be open and discuss any issues each person has. This will require being able to listen without getting angry, and really working to react in a way that is constructive. It’s important that both people in the relationship talk about this before the meeting is held.

Keep a Journal

When trying to figure out why a relationship is experiencing problems, it’s a good idea to keep a journal which is written in every evening. Documenting situations, actions and feelings of the day is a great way to figure out why some problems may be occurring, and it can offer ideas and paths for a resolution.

Seek Counseling

Counseling can do wonders for those dealing with relationship problems and is probably one of the only methods available that can be effective even if only one person in a relationship is willing to commit to it.

Relationship counseling can help people to either make things right, or decide to move on which may be the right answer for some couples. No matter what the resolution ends up being, counseling can help the resolution happen peacefully. In the end, as long as a relationship problem is not ignored and something is done about it, a resolution can happen which is inevitable whether the problem is ignored or not.

Not so long ago, there was a time in this country that divorce was a taboo word. Very few couples experienced divorces because those who married each other stuck to their vows in good times and bad. But now, with divorce being an easy process and having no social repercussions, many people will choose divorce over finding out how to save their marriage.

Get Help If Necessary

The way to save almost any marriage is to recognize that you and your spouse are having problems. If you deal with your problems in a positive way, there should be no reason that you will have to consider a divorce. If you want to find out how to save your marriage, you will need to first talk to your spouse and make sure that they want to work as hard as you do about this. Then, you can together look for resources that will aid you in your quest to save the marriage. If you truly love your spouse and the feeling is mutual, there will not be an obstacle big enough to break up your marriage.

If you find yourself getting into fights about every little thing, the first step in how to save the marriage is to work it out. Everyone gets stressed—you are not the only one. So talk it out. If talks cannot go on between you two without a mediator, then get a mediator. You can find great resources online for names of counseling services that can help you with your heated discussions.

Using a marriage counselor, one way how to save a marriage, can get a little expensive, but you may feel that this relationship is worth any cost that you will have to pay. These services will not only help you save your marriage, but save your family as well.

If you are having trouble in your marriage and there are kids involved, this is even more of a reason to try and fix the problems. Children need to have a stable home life and if this isn’t the best motivation to save a marriage, then there just might be cause for a divorce.

If you don’t want to deal with a divorce at some point in your life, the best solution is to be very selective in your choice of partner. If there is any doubt in your mind that this is not the right person for you, and that you will not be able to spend the rest of your lives together, then don’t marry them. It’s that simple. You may stay single a little longer than you expected, but if you want to avoid learning how to save your marriage it is worth the wait.

There are those few lucky couples that are able to make it completely through their relationship without having the need to go to relationship counseling. There are many more couples though that should be heading directly there without any detours, but never seem to make it. When the relationship is experiencing problems, depending on what those issues are, it may be a good time to step back from it all to evaluate whether or not you and your other half need some outside help.

If you have determined that the relationship is on a rocky road, it is time to seek help by attending relationship counseling, as this assistance may be exactly what you need to put your relationship back on track. But it will only truly work if both people in the relationship want it to work and put forth the right amount of effort. If there is a person in the relationship that does not truly understand or see the need for the relationship counseling, you may be wasting a lot of time and money since these sessions generally do not come cheap.

Getting Started

Now that you and your other half have decided that it may be time to sit down in some relationship counseling sessions, it is time to start finding the right one to attend. A good place to start would be through your church, if you attend one, because they will often offer these services to their members for free. Going this route for relationship counseling could save you a lot of money and it would be nice that it matches your faith. If you do not attend a church, that is not a problem as it is simply a suggestion for those who do.

For others, there are plenty of relationship counseling sessions that can be found in the local yellow pages. The best way to go about this is to ask someone you know who has been to sessions where they went. But because this is such a personal and touchy subject, most people would rather not talk about their need for relationship counseling with others. No matter who you and your other half decide to go with, it is important that the two of you truly feel like you connect with the counselor and the environment. If you do not, then there is nothing wrong with not going back and finding another place that offers relationship counseling.

If you’re having troubles in your relationship and you’re seeking relationship advice, the first rule is to never take advice from someone who can’t remain in a relationship for more than a few months. Beyond that, there are many places to get relationship advice. You can look online, you can read the relationship column in your local newspaper, you can ask a clergy member, you can ask a counselor, you can ask someone who’s been married for a long time or you can just read up as much as you can on the subject. The fact is, no two relationships are alike and what may work for one may not work for another. However, there are some basic pieces of relationship advice that everyone should heed if they hope to have a happy union, whether it’s a dating or marriage relationship.

Communication Is Key

The number one piece of relationship advice every couple should heed is to communicate everything that you’re feeling. Some people aren’t as open as others and, for them, communication may not be easy. But talking isn’t the only means of communication. You can write little notes, you can express yourself in drawings, and you can even use body language to communicate what’s bothering you. Never keep things bottled in. That only leaves you ready to explode over the littlest thing and that never turns out good. So always communicate your feelings if you want to remain close with your special someone.

Never Go To Bed Angry

The next piece of relationship advice is to always work out your problems before bed. Don’t go to bed angry because when you wake up, it’ll only get worse. It’s not hard to work through things before you go to bed. If you truly love that person, you should want to work through things so that the two of you can become closer. Fighting is always a part of relationships. It’s healthy to argue sometimes. Violence, however, should never be tolerated. But minor bickering is a fact of life and you should always have a resolution to the bickering before you go to sleep. Any relationship expert will tell you that.

The best relationship advice you can ever hear, however, is that you should always make time for one another. Alone time is necessary; as is time with the guys or girls, but you must make quality time for each other. Even if you’ve been living together for a long time and things seem stale, make a point to have a date night once a week. Keep things new and fresh and always keep in mind the reason the two of you got together in the first place. If you don’t pay attention to any other relationship advice, remember this: spend lots of quality time with your loved one and watch how much closer the two of you become.

Some couples start having marriage trouble when there are frequent fights and disagreements between the spouses. For some, having marriage trouble is part of married life while for others this can mark the beginning of a downhill progression to a separation. Depending on how one looks at it, either positively or negatively you can manage most kinds of marriage troubles that come your way.

Communicate With Each Other

Communication is vital to a happy and healthy marriage. Expressing how one feels and listening to your spouse can lead to a more open relationship. Marriage trouble usually starts when there is little connection between the spouses and there are unresolved conflicts that fester and grow. Being able to let your spouse understand you or at least hear you out can be cleansing for you and the same goes for your spouse as well. Voicing opinions and acknowledging the causes of marriage troubles can help strengthen your marriage stop any rift from forming between both parties.

Acknowledge Marital Responsibility

Many couples tend to shirk their spousal responsibilities as well as their marital responsibilities. Some do not even know what these responsibilities are. Each married couple made vows in front of God and all other people present during their wedding ceremony regarding their responsibilities as a married couple. Marriage troubles sometimes arise from responsibilities that are forsaken or taken for granted.

Couples who do not acknowledge that they have a marital responsibility to their spouse may as well forget a happy marriage. Getting married is all about the responsibility that both spouses have towards each other. Being single and married are two totally different things and you need to understand this before you even get married.

Spend Time With Each Other

Couples who spend a lot of time with each other tend to have fewer marriage troubles compared to those who do not. Although socializing with other people is healthy, taking timeout of a busy schedule to go on a date and talk is a way to fend off any kind of marriage trouble. Talking may even be optional for some, just spending time with each other can be fulfilling as a couple. Showing that you care for each other in action and also in words can stave off any marriage troubles that are brewing.

Managing marriage troubles is something that both the husband and the wife need to take part in. A one sided effort to take care of a marriage trouble can be futile without the much needed help of the other.
